Restorative Yoga in Malibu, CA
All forms of yoga have profound therapeutic physical and psychological benefits. At Malibu’s Serenity Trauma Healing Center, we provide restorative yoga near Los Angeles that focuses on relaxing the body. It involves holding poses for longer periods of time than other types of yoga, with supports such as bolsters, blocks, and blankets intended to help you relax and rest.
Restorative yoga can be used to help heal trauma survivors because of its positive effects on the nervous system. Typically, sequences consist of five or six poses. Combined with deep breathing and stillness, it provides an opportunity to feel and tolerate every sensation.
Restorative yoga poses can leave us nourished and well-rested. Yoga produces anti-aging benefits by dramatically lowering stress, uplifting mood, and aid in more restful sleep. The practice, however, is more beneficial than sleep because it truly provides the body an opportunity to replenish its energy and heal.
The Benefits of Restorative Yoga
Countless studies have proven the physical and emotional benefits of this type of yoga. Like other forms of yoga, it stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which is known to balance the body and lower one’s heart rate and blood pressure. It also helps stimulate the immune system and keep the endocrine system operating healthily.
Feeling stressed and overwhelmed overworks the PNS, and it can become depleted or under-active, potentially leading to illness. Restorative yoga, Yin yoga, and other forms of guided relaxation and meditation help stimulate the PNS and restore the body’s balance. Researchers have found that restorative yoga can relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. In cancer patients, it can also relieve pain and reduce toxicity from traditional medical treatments.
How a Yoga Class Works
Learning from and being guided by a Malibu yoga teacher can be a very relaxing experience. To relax your mind and body, the lights may be dimmed to set the mood and soft music may be played in the background. Poses in long holds for 10 to 20 minutes help to recalibrate the nervous system. Your instructor will guide you in focusing on your breathing as the music plays or they talk you through meditation. Deep stretching ultimately leaves your body feeling open and refreshed.
